The name Kids for Turtles is somewhat symbolic in that turtles are among the few living remnants of the pre-historic era and their existence dates back long before humans. Conversely, our children represent the future. Unlike most species on the planet today, turtles have thrived for over 250 million years without having undergone significant physical changes. In recent times human activity has had marked impacts on turtle populations and their plight is analogous in many ways to the old ‘canary in the coal mine’ adage. Our children will inherit the earth, and not only will be subjected to whatever legacy we leave behind, they will assume responsibility for it’s stewardship as future policy makers. Kids For Turtles brings turtles and children (past and present) together in an organized forum through public outreach and awareness efforts to facilitate a promising future for our environment. |
