2018 SUMMER JOB POSITION

Environmental Education Community Outreach Liaison

Position Type:                      8 week summer contracts (flexible hours with weekend and evening commitments)

Work Location:                   Kids For Turtles Office, 450 Atherley Road, Tudhope Park,  City of Orillia

Job Region:                           Simcoe County

Salary:                                     $14.50/hour, 30 hours/week

Start Date:                              Sunday, July 1, 2018

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the care and control of turtles
  • Ÿ  Become familiar with biology, and impacts of priority invasive species affecting local environments – with particular focus on the issue of aquatic invasive species introductions through recreational activities surrounding Lake Simcoe;
  • Ÿ  Developing, coordinating and delivering education and outreach programs (including materials) to all age groups in the community to assist in both the development of invading species awareness initiatives and environmental education around turtles
  • Ÿ  Contacting elementary schools, churches, youth groups, summer camps and other organizations about the delivery of programs
  • Ÿ  Coordinate and implement a community invasive species eradication event engaging volunteers to participate
  • Ÿ  Provide weekly reports and updates on activities and a final report both to OFAH and KFT
  • Ÿ  Engage members of the public in order to recruit program volunteers and work as a team to coordinate and train volunteers
  • Ÿ  Assist in the coordination and implementation of organizational events
  • Ÿ  Contribute article to local news sources
  • Ÿ  Manage office duties and handling inquiries from the public
  • Ÿ  Keep social media sites active and up to date
  • Ÿ  Photo-documentation of events, projects and functions and contribute to a photo database for the organization to use in media, promotion and project research
  • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications/Aptitudes:

  • Valid Class G or G2 Ontario Drivers License and full time access to a vehicle (mandatory)
  • Enrolled in post-secondary education an asset
  • Self-starter who has the ability to work effectively independently
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including experience conveying information to the public (e.g. presentations to community/contributing articles to newspapers/media publications)
  • Knowledge of computer applications, specifically MS Office and excellent keyboard skills
  • Ability to work flexible hours and perform occasional field work
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
